Chiropractic Explained

Chiropractic is the most widely used natural health care in North America, though probably the most misunderstood. It is based on the understanding of the self-healing capabilities of the human body.

The body is a self-healing, self-regulating organism. The nervous system is the master control system of the body and is responsible for maintaining the function of every muscle, organ, cell and tissue. Therefore, if there is any interference in how the nervous system is working, the body loses its ability to heal and self regulate. A chiropractor’s role is to eliminate any interference to your nervous system, thus allowing your body to return to a state of healing and self-regulating.

Self healing:

The body will always do its best to heal itself. When you cut your finger, the body will heal it regardless of whether you put a Band-Aid or some Polysporin on it, your mom kisses it better or you do nothing. The intelligence of the body will stop the bleeding and build new tissues to close the wound.

The same happens in the body with bacteria or viral invasion. Without having to consciously think about it, your body will first create a fever to kill off the bacteria and prevent any further growth. Then the immune system increases production of white blood cells to finish fighting the bacteria and eliminate it from the body.

Self-regulating:

The body is in continual self-regulation. Your blood pressure varies throughout the day dependent on your stress levels. Your internal body temperature changes throughout the day based on your environment. Stomach acids are produced at varying levels and amounts in order to balance out the digestive system, and so on and so forth.

It has been known since the beginning of modern science that every function and every cell of the body is controlled through the nervous system. The brain and spinal cord make up the most important parts of your nervous system and they reside within the bones of your spine.

If any of the bones of your skull or vertebral column are not in proper alignment, or are not working correctly, they cause interference with the functioning of the nervous system. This may be direct pressure on the brain stem or nerves, or a stretching or compression of the entire spinal cord. The resulting interference causes the body to lose its ability to self-heal and self-regulate to its internal and external environment.

These misalignments of the spine are called subluxations. A chiropractor’s job is to detect and correct any subluxation/ misalignments in the bones of the spine/skull/pelvis, thus allowing full function to return to the nervous system. This, in turn, allows your body to regain full control of its regulation of all the organ systems. The functions of the immune system also return to maximum levels.

Many people with a variety of health conditions experience great benefits through chiropractic care when the integrity of the nervous system is restored. But people seek chiropractic care for optimum health and well-being as well; because when the nervous system is free of interference, the body is able to provide the best health possible.
