The Kind Diet: 6 Tips from Alicia Silverstone’s Vegan Book

Alicia Silverstone_vegan bookAlicia Silverstone has channeled her passion about being a vegan into writing a book called The Kind Diet which is set to hit book stores in October 2009.

Inside the pages of Silverstone’s book she describes how choosing a plant-based diet can benefit your body and save the lives of animals. Alicia further illustrates that The Kind Diet is “all about being your healthiest and feeling your best as well as healing the planet through food”

What is eating kind you may ask?  According to Alicia it means,

being kind to yourself and putting yourself first and making what you eat the biggest priority as well as making it fun and different.

Her purpose for writing the book was to let people know that they could eat this amazing and delicious food that is also good for you. When asked if she worked out, Alicia says that diet always comes first, exercise second. When she needs to be in shape quickly, she will amp up her exercise by walking her dogs and doing yoga.

In an interview with The Daily Green, Alicia discusses 6 principles of her Kind Diet:

1. Eating Kind Is a Beautiful Thing

Eating “Kind” is about being good to yourself as well as the planet through the foods that you eat. A plant-based diet filled with whole and organic foods will provide you with tons of energy, mental clarity, gorgeous skin and a zest for life. The kindness discussed also extends to the earth itself. Adopting a plant-based diet is one of the most powerful ways to help heal the planet. A plant-based diet requires less fuel, water and other resources and therefore is much lighter on the planet.

2. Doing Good Also Tastes Good!

Instead of thinking about what you’re NOT having, it’s important to realize how much MORE you’re adding to your diet. These healthy, healing foods are not only good for you but they taste delicious. I want to shatter the notion that eating healthy is somehow a sacrifice.

3. Rethink the Word “Diet”

Unlike other diet books, The Kind won’t ask you to freak out about calories, carbohydrates or the glycemic index. It will change your relationship with food and your body, transforming the whole idea of dieting for you.

4. Even Small Changes Can Be Huge

Change is hard and I recognize that diff people are at varying stages of their journey, which is why I designed three approaches. People can choose their path according to where they’re at and what feels right to them.

The first approach is called Flirting, and it’s simply sticking your toe in the pool of The Kind Diet. The second plan is Vegan; it’s for experienced flirts and those who, after reading this book, will want to commit to a plant-based diet. The third plan, Superhero, emphasizes whole grains, organic vegetables and sea vegetables. It will make you practically levitate! And then there’s everything in between. Really, the book has something for everyone. Throughout are plenty of little choices you can make that will have huge impacts on how you look and feel, and the health of our planet.

5. Be Kind to Yourself

Nobody is perfect so don’t beat yourself up for straying from the new path you’ve chosen. Brush yourself off, remind yourself how great it feels when you do eat “kind,” and get back on!

6. Don’t Forget Dessert!

I truly believe that there is no life without dessert. Luckily, there are so many delicious “kind” deserts out there (and in the book), that you’re guaranteed to never feel deprived!
