The Vancouver-based company Intrawest has just announced that when the ski season begins in a few weeks, it will recommend all skiers and snowboarders wear helmets, and it will revise its advertising campain to feature skiers and snowboarders that are wearing protective head gear.
The announcement comes six months after the death of actress Natasha Richardson, who was skiing in a beginners trail while taking a ski lesson at Mont Tremblant in Quebec, Canada. Richardson suffered an epidural hematoma that was due to a blunt impact to the head. A spokesperson for the resort noted Richardson was not wearing a helmet while skiing and didn’t collide with anything when she fell.
Intrawest also clarifies that the requirements will make headgear mandatory for all children and teens enrolled in ski and snowboard programs and for any student, regardless of age, taking part in freestyle terrain park programs. Although this new safety policy is a step in the right direction by the Intrawest Group, the requirement does not include adults who participate in private ski lessons.
The Intrawest network also includes Canadian Mountain Holidays, the largest heli-skiing operation in the world, Panorama Mountain Village, Snowshoe Mountain and Mont Tremblant where Natasha Richardson suffered a fatal skiing accident, and was not wearing a helmet.
