Actor Patrick Swayze who started his career as a dancer and grew into a Hollywood star with box-office hits like “Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost,” died on Monday in his home from pancreatic cancer. He was 57.
In January 2008, Swayze was diagnosed with one of the most deadly forms of cancer, stage 4 pancreatic cancer. It was later disclosed by Swayze himself that the disease had spread into his liver. The actor also announced that he would undergo experimental drug treatment in his battle against cancer.
Pancreatic cancer was responsible for the fourth highest number of deaths among cancer deaths in North America in 2007. The risk of developing this type of cancer is about the same for both men and women. A number of factors increase the risk of developing pancreatic cancer including smoking, chronic pancreatitis (chronic inflammation of the pancreas), and possibly diabetes mellitus. The majority of studies do not support a relationship between coffee intake and pancreatic cancer.
Swayze surprised his fans and the movie industry with the filming of a detective series for television, which was broadcast earlier this year called “The Beast” in which he played the grueling lead role.
