Marisa Tomei Spins the Hula Hoop Workout

Some actresses prepare for a movie with Yoga, Pilates or expensive trainers. The My Cousin Vinny star, Marisa Tomei turned to the hula hoop.

The Oscar-nominated actress, who showed off her hooping moves on the Ellen DeGeneres show earlier this year (see video below), became addicted to the hooping workout when she had to get in shape for the movie The Wrestler. “I hula hoop a lot which is my favorite part of my fitness routine now,” Tomei told Ellen. Also adding that she keeps a travel hoop handy for when she is away from home.

Hooping tones the muscles of the core and the entire body while also providing an intense cardiovascular workout, burning between 400 and 600 calories an hour, all with no to low impact to your joints. It’s best to use a weighted hula-hoop as it makes the exercises easier to do by keeping the hoop spinning for longer. Most enthusiasts who practice Hooping regularly notice changes in their bodies within just a few weeks. Plus it’s fun and sexy, so even though your heart is pumping and you’re covered in sweat, it hardly feels like a workout.

Marisa uses a weighted Hoopnotica hula hoop ($50). Using an adult-size, slightly weighted hoop makes regular hooping and doing tricks much easier, which you can learn from the Hoopdance or Hoopnotica ($20) DVDs.
