Adam Yauch, has disclosed that he needs to have an operation after being diagnosed with cancer in a salivary gland. The 44-year-old musician, revealed that he had noticed a “little lump” in his throat around two months ago which he recently reported to his doctor. “He sent me to a specialist and they did tests and I actually have a form of cancer in the parotid gland and a lymph node,” Yauch said.
Cancer of the salivary gland is a malignant tumor of the tissues that produce saliva. The clusters of salivary glands are located below the tongue, on the sides of the face, just in front of the ears, in the area of the upper jaw along the inside of the teeth, as well as under the jawbone.
Salivary gland cancer is rare in the United States. Statistics show that an estimated two adults out of 100,000 will be diagnosed with salivary gland cancer this year. Additionally, most tumors in the parotid gland and about half of the tumors in the submandibular gland are benign (noncancerous).
Yauch said the cancer had been detected early enough and is expected to recover from what he described as a “pain in the ass.” Further good news is that they did scans on his body and the cancer is only localized in that one area, not in a place that will affect Adam’s voice.
The Beastie Boys have had to push back the release date of their latest album “Hot Sauce Committee Part 1″ and the band has also been forced to cancel several concerts across the United States and Canada.
